星街すいせい (Hoshimachi Suisei) releases 星をみる少女 (Hoshi wo Miru Shōjo / The Girl Who Watches the Stars) today, and it arrives with the full weight of a proper creative project behind it. Composed by HarumakiGohan (はるまきごはん) and mixed by NNZN, the song is the centrepiece of プロジェクトスターゲイザー (Project Stargazer) — a collaboration between Suisei and travel agency JTB — and the MV, shot on location on 小豆島 (Shodoshima), is one of the most visually ambitious productions in VTuber music this year.
What ‘Hoshi wo Miru Shōjo’ Sounds Like
HarumakiGohan is a Vocaloid producer known for emotionally vivid, dreamy synth-pop — the kind of music that feels like it exists slightly outside of time. That sensibility carries directly into 星をみる少女. The arrangement is soft and expansive: layered synths, gentle percussion, the kind of instrumentation that opens up space rather than filling it. It doesn’t build to a power moment so much as it deepens gradually, pulling you further in.
This is a quiet song, but not a small one. The production breathes, and NNZN‘s mix keeps everything warm and uncluttered — the vocals sit right at the front without feeling compressed or polished to sterility. It’s exactly the kind of treatment this song needs.
Suisei’s Vocal Performance and Why the Material Fits
Hoshimachi Suisei has a voice that can do power and precision — her uptempo tracks and live performances have made that clear for years. But Hoshi wo Miru Shōjo asks for something different: stillness, openness, a sense of wonder rather than momentum. She delivers it completely. The vocal performance here is restrained and genuinely beautiful, leaning into the emotional texture of the melody rather than demonstrating range.
The title is almost too perfect for her. Suisei’s name means “comet.” Her whole visual identity is built around stars and the night sky. A song called “The Girl Who Watches the Stars,” composed with this much delicacy, sung by her — it lands as something that feels inevitable rather than curated.
The MV: A Live-Action Production Shot on Shodoshima
The music video is a genuine production. Directed by Daisuke Kobayashi (DADADA) and produced through EPOCH Inc. and AMNI Center Studio, it was filmed on location on 小豆島 (Shodoshima), a small island in the Seto Inland Sea known for its olive groves and quiet coastal landscapes. The crew includes a full CG and compositing team, motion capture engineering by SOLID CUBE, illustration by Fly, and still photography by multiple photographers.
The result is a music video that feels more like a short film than a promotional clip — Suisei’s 3D model placed into real locations, moving through light and landscape in a way that feels genuinely emotional rather than technically impressive. It suits the song exactly: unhurried, observational, more interested in atmosphere than spectacle.
Project Stargazer and What This Release Represents
プロジェクトスターゲイザー (Project Stargazer) is a collaboration between Hoshimachi Suisei and JTB — Japan’s largest travel agency — framing travel through the lens of stargazing and the kind of quiet, purposeful journeys that Suisei’s music often evokes. The Shodoshima shoot is part of that project, and it gives the whole release a coherence that goes beyond just “VTuber releases a song.” This is a fully realised creative package: song, MV, visual identity, location, concept.
For an artist who sold out Nippon Budokan in February 2025 and has since announced her own personal agency Studio STELLAR alongside an arena tour, 星をみる少女 is a deliberate step in a different direction — quieter, more poetic, less about proving anything. Seven years into her career, that kind of confidence is its own statement.
This is one of the best things she’s released. Give it the time it asks for.
