  • Kaz Hoshinouta and the Atanaru DBD-Bu Crew Take On BLUE ENCOUNT’s ‘Survivor’ as a Four-Way Vocal Assault

Kaz Hoshinouta (星乃歌カズ) has pulled together a full squad for this one. Survivor (サバイバー), the new cover from the group billing あたなるDBD部 (Atanaru DBD-Bu), landed on October 29 — and instead of a solo take, Hoshinouta split the vocals three ways, sharing mic time with Byakuya Reito (白夜零兎), Minanagi Jiyuu (水凪自由) and Kohinata Ryuji (小日向りゅーじ). Four distinct voices, one very angry rock song.

Why ‘Survivor’ Is the Perfect Cover for a Vocalist Group

The source material needs no introduction if you’ve watched any mecha anime in the last decade. Survivor is the BLUE ENCOUNT track that served as the opening theme for Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, and it’s one of those songs that’s basically engineered for group performances — driving verses that hand off cleanly, and a chorused, fist-in-the-air hook built around the line “We are 最後のsurvivor” (we are the last survivor). The original’s desperation-and-determination energy survives the translation to a four-person utaite setup completely intact.

Four Voices, One Chorus: How the Vocal Split Works

The smartest thing about this arrangement is how much space each vocalist gets. With three other singers on the track, it would’ve been easy to bury everyone in unison — instead, the parts trade off, and the differences in tone between Hoshinouta, Reito, Jiyuu and Ryuji give the verses actual momentum. Group covers live or die on whether the blend feels like a band or a playlist on shuffle; this one feels like a band. The YouTube tags even bill the group as a 男性グループ (male vocal group) performance, and the chemistry backs that up.

The Production Team Behind the Cover

The credits read like a proper production, not a rushed upload. Yasuki (安紀) handled the illustration, 872 put the video together, and the mix comes from Shishii (ししおー) — and the mix is doing real work here. Balancing four male vocals over a dense rock instrumental is genuinely difficult, and nothing gets muddy. Hoshinouta also served as the project’s planner (企画), which tracks with the X post announcing the full version minutes after upload, alongside a Short cut for the algorithm crowd.

The ‘Atatakaku Naru Gasshou’ Project Keeps Growing

This cover slots into an ongoing series on Hoshinouta’s channel described as あたたかくなる合唱 (atatakaku naru gasshou — “a chorus that warms you up”), a running lineup of group covers spanning DECO*27, syudou, Jin, BUMP OF CHICKEN, Porno Graffitti and more. Survivor is a natural fit for that list: an anime anthem with built-in singalong DNA, tackled by a crew that clearly knows the song’s shape. Early numbers are modest — as of now the video sits in the hundreds of views with a remarkably strong like-to-view ratio — but for a four-way collab like this, the engagement is the story, not the counter.
